Scope note: I focus on pumps and equipment. I don’t take on major plumbing work (pipe reruns, re-plumbs, extensive pipe repairs). If pipework is involved, I can still diagnose and advise what’s needed.

Diagnosis-first

I’ll identify the root cause and explain options before any work starts.

Repair where sensible

If a reliable repair is possible, I’ll do that rather than push a replacement.

Professional finish

Tidy work, solid testing, and simple guidance on what to watch for next.

What I can help with

I can help with

  • Pump diagnostics (no prime, low flow, air in system, noise)
  • Pump servicing and performance checks
  • Pump replacements / like-for-like upgrades
  • Electrical fault symptoms (buzzing, tripping, failing to start)
  • Advice on sizing, compatibility, and best next steps

I don’t cover

  • Major plumbing work (pipe reruns, re-plumbs, extensive pipe repairs)
  • Large underground leak repairs
  • General household plumbing

If it looks plumbing-related, I’ll still help diagnose and explain what’s needed.

Common issues I fix

No prime / losing prime

Often caused by air leaks, worn seals, or suction-side issues — I’ll diagnose and advise clearly.

Noisy pump

Bearings, vibration, or cavitation. I’ll assess whether repair is sensible or replacement is better.

Low flow

Blockages, basket problems, performance drop, or setup issues — I’ll pinpoint the likely cause.

Tripping / won’t start

Electrical symptoms such as failed start/run capacitors, buzzing, tripping, or non-start faults.

Pump capacitor faults (a common fix)

One of the most common reasons a pool pump fails to start is a faulty start or run capacitor. This often looks like a major failure — but in many cases, it’s a straightforward repair.

Pump hums but won’t start

A classic capacitor symptom. The motor has power but can’t get going.

Starts when spun by hand

Strong indicator of a failed start capacitor rather than a bad motor.

Intermittent starting

Weak or failing capacitors can cause unpredictable behaviour before total failure.

Trips on start-up

In some cases, electrical stress from a failed capacitor causes breaker trips.

I diagnose capacitor-related faults as part of pump repair work and replace capacitors only where appropriate, using the correct rating for the pump. This is often far more cost-effective than replacing the entire pump.

Note: If testing shows the issue is outside the pump (supply, isolator, control box, etc.), I’ll advise when a qualified electrician is required.

What to send me

Best info to include

Pump make/model (if known), what it’s doing (noise/leak/not priming/low flow), and your postcode. Photos of the pump setup help a lot.

What happens next

I’ll confirm the best approach, estimate travel/time, and give you a clear quote or estimate before any work starts.
